Michigan Sept. 2010: Part 3

Our fifth stop on our mini road trip through Northern Michigan was the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse. Constructed in 1840, and with a height of 38 ft. it lies right on the coast of Lake Huron. The lighthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of George Parris, a former museum caretaker. The tour guide warned us that we may feel a tap on our shoulders as we were ascending the stairs. Neither Rob nor I felt anything of that sort but just being in that creepy lighthouse literally gave me the chills. Although it was a little eerie, the view was pretty awesome from the top. That was my first experience ever in a lighthouse..which was so cool!

The view of Lake Huron from the top.

Looking down from the top.

This is the light at the top of the lighthouse that no longer works. Some people have claimed that over time they have seen this light to be lit at night even though it no longer works. Creepy huh?

We made it to the top! :)

Now onto our sixth stop..let me remind you this was all in one day! The next place we went to was the New Presque Isle Lighthouse. The last one was the old and this is the new :) The New Presque Isle Lighthouse was built in 1870. Standing at a height of 109 ft, it is the tallest lighthouse in Michigan that is accessible to tourists. This lighthouse is almost 3x as tall as the Old Presque Lighthouse we climbed first. But we decided to climb anyways. It was quite a work out. The stairs were winding around in a 360 degree angle. But it was definitely worth it. Probably one of the coolest things I've ever done. The view from the top was absolutely incredible. Breathtaking.

Here are two photos of the New Presque Isle Lighthouse.

The winding stairs I was talking about.

It was extremely windy up top of the lighthouse..which is why it looks like I am holding on for dear life. Because I was.

We were really high up. Look how small the cars are!

And lastly here are four photos of the gorgeous view from way up top :)

Our sixth and final stop of the day before heading back to the house was the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. By this time of day it was close to sunset. When we left from the New Presque Isle Lighthouse we were about two hours away from the dunes. So we had race to make the sunset. Rob got to put his driving skills to the test especially when it came to the final road leading up to the sand dunes. It was a twisty, curvy, crazy road that was winding in and out of the trees. I think he felt like a race car driver at that moment. But we made it! We made it in time to see the beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan at the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Here are some photos of the sunset and the dunes.

After the sunset we had a two hour drive back to the house. After our 16 hour tour that day we slept so good that night! It was a long day for sure but one of the most incredible days ever. And I couldn't have asked for a better person to enjoy it all with.

I have a few more things to share from our Michigan trip but you'll have to read on to the final part 4. Thanks for reading all of this so far! I hope you enjoyed it :)
